We are aware, more than perhaps at any other time in history, of the immensity of our world. We are living our brief lives on a small blue and white planet, in a tiny solar system, in the modestly sized Milky Way Galaxy with its 400 billion stars. And all of this set in a universe of some 50 billion galaxies.
In our era, we're also becoming aware of the immensity of the world within. Other cultures down through the centuries were more practiced in traversing this inner landscape than we have been, but we are slowly getting the picture. When we first stop and smell the hidden roses we open ourselves to the amazing inner terrain that some philosophers, a few theologians and most poets and mystics have known as a marvelous “garden of delight.”
What's a gardener to do? Within this immensity, who are the people one could search out to act as guides or mentors? When a soulful way of living seems like an attractive alternative to the lifestyle our culture teaches us, how do you find the entranceway to such a life?
Applewood was formed in 1982 because two very different men - a film producer and
a church beaurocrat - found themselves, and people they knew, struggling with questions like these. Through seminars, workshops, conferences and lectures, as well as some broadcast television and two video series, we offered people the chance to meet with leading edge explorers: theologians, scientists, philosophers, poets, Jungian analysts - people with profound understandings of the human journey.
In 1995 we were introduced to the immense world of the Internet. We created an Applewood domain, filled it with printed and video resources, promoted some study circles and a discussion group called "By The Fire"...and watched as visitors from all over the globe came to examine and explore our site.
We have decided to narrow the focus of our web pages and give attention to the Bly-Woodman video series and the related resources, with the conviction that our North American culture - and indeed our world - can benefit from deeper understandings of the masculine and feminine dimensions of human existence.
We also want to offer some additional help with the task of "soul making." To that end, we've designed a special page - Care of the Soul - that we hope, will be informative, provocative and energizing!
